The exhibition Refocusing on the Medium: The Rise of East Asia Video Art assembles key protagonists that initiated experiments with the medium of video originating from Japan, South Korea and China, including Katsuhiro Yamaguchi, Nam June Paik, Yoko Ono, Keigo Yamamoto, Kim Kulim, Takahiko Iimura, Shigeko Kubota, Park Hyunki, Soungui Kim, Wang Gongxin, Ellen Pau, Chen Shaoxiong, Geng Jianyi, Zhu Jia, and Yuan Goang-Ming.
They were born from 1928 to 1965, and were active on the eve of globalization and flourished in the new century with the rapid development of Internet technology. When we head toward the end of 2020, looking back on the early video art practice in East Asia, “contemporary” is now history.
